A new research conducted by Wexer has revealed that virtual fitness classes can significantly increase member acquisition, engagement and retention at gyms and fitness clubs.

Virtual fitness classes can significantly drive member engagement and retention at fitness clubs, according to a new research released by Wexer earlier this week. The leading provider of virtual fitness and cycling classes surveyed 1,400 members and found that 52.2% of members participating in virtual classes go to the gym three or more times a week and spend more time working out than members who do not take these classes. 21% of virtual users have had a gym membership for more than a year, compared to only 15% of non-virtual users.

The number of group exercise classes available at the gym was the key factor that influenced more than a half (six out of 10) of the members surveyed in their decision to get a membership. Four out of these six named virtual fitness classes as their main reason for joining.

Virtual classes have gained in popularity in the last three years. Only 5% of these classes had more than seven participants in 2014. In 2016, the number grew to 55% of the classes. 75.7% of the members who were not participating in virtual classes said that they were likely to try them out in the future.

Wexer's research also investigated the most popular categories of virtual classes. Cardio HIIT was the top choice for 67% of users, while mind-body has gained a considerable following in recent years, with 44% users selecting it as their favourite type of virtual workout, compared to 38% in 2014.
