Reflexion Health Improves Outcomes in Rehabilitation

Reflexion Health develops advanced Kinect-based software that helps medical professionals improve the delivery of healthcare.

Reflexion Health is a San Diego-based healthcare IT company that develops prescription software for use in rehabilitation programs. The software uses Microsoft’s Kinect for Windows, which tracks patients’ motions as they exercise to measure their progress and to ensure that they are doing the exercises correctly.

Reflexion Health’s first project, called Vera, uses Kinect technology to track patients’ adherence to the prescribed rehabilitation program. Designed to make physical rehabilitation more effective and engaging, the platform encourages patients to exercise while simultaneously providing healthcare professionals with the ability to customise treatment programs for individual patients and to review their progress either during visits or on their own time.

The Vera concept uses an interactive interface to engage patients and motivate them to stick with the program once they leave the rehabilitation facility. Patients undergoing rehabilitation are usually given instructions or photocopied handouts by physical therapists and expected to perform the exercises correctly and to adhere to the program at home. Without supervision, however, patients’ progress can be slowed down or even made worse if they don’t do the exercises correctly or consistently. In this respect, Reflexion Health’s software creates accountability, providing a relatively low-cost solution that improves both adherence and outcomes for patients. The Kinect-based platform is currently used in pilot studies at the Center for Connected Health in Boston and at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.

Reflexion Health’s software offers patients educational material and instructional videos, guiding them when they are performing exercises on their own. By taking on some of the tasks normally performed by clinicians, the software helps make the delivery of healthcare more affordable while simultaneously improving patients’ health and reinforcing the clinicians’ message.
