Sony has announced the launch of the Smart Tennis Sensor, designed to improve players' racquet game, in the United States and Canada.

Sony has teamed up with leading tennis equipment manufacturers Prince, Wilson, and Yonex, to introduce its cutting edge Smart Tennis Sensor to the U.S. and Canada. The device will be compatible with select racquet models made by these manufacturers.

The Smart Tennis Sensor is suitable for tennis players at all levels and designed to help them optimise their game. It delivers real-time shot visualisations to players' tablets and smartphones while at the same time displaying relevant shot metrics and showing a recorded video of the shot.

The Smart Tennis Sensor uses advanced motion detection and sensing technologies as well as new vibration analysis mechanics to make it possible for players to analyse a broad spectrum of movements, ranging from swing speed, ball speed and ball spin to ball impact spot and shot count.

The sensor is able to detect a variety of swing types, including slice forehand, topspin forehand, volley forehand, smash, slice backhand, and serve. The device wirelessly connects with tablets and smart devices using Bluetooth, allowing performance metrics to be instantly visualised on the screen. Along with offering the visualisation of each swing, the Smart Tennis Sensor can simultaneously record rallies. The app's social sharing features allow players to share their results across social media accounts, and the sensor's Memory Mode lets them store up to 12,000 shots for an easy download to their smartphone.

The Smart Tennis Sensor weighs only 8 grams and is 31.3 mm in diameter. These dimensions ensure that the impact on players' performance is reduced to a minimum. The device can be securely attached to the bottom of the racquet and is easily transferred, along with all the data, to another compatible racquet.

Furumi Hideyuki, SVP, the president of UX & Product Strategy Group, UX, Product Strategy and Creative Platform, Sony Corporation, said, “Sony is a company which aims to enhance customers’ daily lives by offering products, applications and services which inspire and fulfil their curiosity. Through working with our partners in the tennis racket market, Sony will offer its Smart Tennis Sensor, to all levels of tennis players ranging from beginners to experts and is very excited about the prospect of enriching tennis with this new experience.”

“We are very excited about our new partnership with Sony,” said Tyler Herring, Vice President of Product Development, Prince Global Sports. “At Prince we have built our brand around helping tennis players improve their game through innovative product design, so partnering with another brand who believes in a similar philosophy makes perfect sense for us. By allowing players to analyze their game with advanced data collection tools like the Sony’s Smart Tennis Sensor, we believe that the racquet selection process becomes much easier which is the key to having success on the tennis court.”

Sony's Smart Tennis Sensor has an IP65 waterproof/dustproof rating and is approved by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for competitions. It will be available for purchase through the Wilson.com website and select Wilson dealers by the end of January 2015.
